Fishing in Cyprus

Fishing is an extremely popular sport in Cyprus. All year round, locals and tourists are to be found fishing the numerous reservoirs on the island. Deep sea fishing too attracts anglers from around the world, many of whom delight in catching such exotic fish as tuna and amberjack in the warm waters that surround Cyprus. All in all, Cyprus is a fisherman's paradise!

Wherever you are located in Cyprus, a place to fish is never far away. There are some 25 reservoirs (dams) in Cyprus, all of which are well stocked with a huge variety of fish. Many of the reservoirs are within a twenty-minute to half-an-hour's drive from the main resorts along the coast, and offer plenty of space to choose an ideal swim.

Top locations for coarse fishing include Yermasogeia, Dhypotamos and Asprogremmos.

Situated only 10 minutes outside of Limassol, Yermasogeia is a decent sided reservoir that holds Roach, Carp, Silver Bream, Bass and Grey Mullet. Aside from Polemidia it is the closest reservoir to the main tourist area of Limassol.

Dhypotamos is midway between Larnaka and Limassol. It can be found in the hills to the north of junction 12, just off the main highway that runs between these two towns. This reservoir currently holds the record for the largest fish ever caught in Cyprus - a rod bending 31lb 4oz Mirror Carp. Zander, Tench, Bass, Silver Bream, Roach and Catfish can be caught in Dhypotamos too.

Asprogremmos Reservoir is one of the largest dams in Cyprus. It is also the closest one to Paphos International Airport. Trout, Carp, Roach, Bass and Catfish are all present in the reservoir, which has the potential to produce some 15lb - 20lb monsters.

Sea fishing
If sea fishing is more your thing, Cyprus abounds with opportunities to try your hand at catching some of the 260 species of fish that bask in the waters around Cyprus.

Organized trips are available from the main coastal resorts, as well as from many of the fishing villages along the coastline. Most of the trips from the main resorts cater for both beginners and the more experienced fisherman alike. Some trips also offer packages that include lunch on board, and a stop where you can don flippers and a mask and go out snorkeling.
